Programme Note

Two Cricket Canons were composed for the choir Ishirini's tour to India in the spring of 2011 and were designed to be performed in school singing workshops. India's men's cricket team had just won the World Cup, so the popularity of cricket, and the national team, was at an all time high.

The first canon, Indian cricketers is a canon in up to 9 parts over an ostinato two-part bass line. Many of the key members of the 2011 World Cup-winning team are given their own individual phrase, beginning with Sachin Tendulkar, followed by Gambhir, Sehwag, Kohli, Harbhajan Singh and Dhoni.

Bowling to Tendulkar begins as a canon in four soprano parts, which are later joined by a canon in two parts in the men's voices in augmentation.
